This idyllic atoll hosts under its pristine waters more than 60 WWII wrecks

The mystery destination is: Truk Lagoon (Chuuk)

Clue#1

After the WWII American “Operation Hailstone” against the Japanese Fleet, Truk Lagoon became an underwater graveyard of supply vessels (Maru) and planes.  Many historical and war related artifacts can still be found while exploring the different parts of the shipwrecks; such as  guns, ammunition, medicine bottles, gas masks, tanks and newspapers.

It became a scuba diving paradise after a Jacques Cousteau documentary.

Clue#2

In 1969, Jacques Cousteau showed the world this ghost city with his documentary “Lagoon of Lost Ships”. After this, Truk truly took off as a scuba diving paradise! Many of the wrecks were still full of bodies and realising this, Japan started recovery efforts to repatriate many of those bodies for burial. However, a few of them still remain inside some of the Truk wrecks to this day, adding a poignant angle to these amazing wrecks!

Clue #3

It’s not well known that, aside from wecks, Truk Lagoon offers some of some incredible shark diving, with many people using the words ‘shark- infested waters!’ White and black tips, grey reef, nurse sharks and even guitar sharks patrol the different wrecks and reefs! The Nippo Maru and the Fujikawa Maru are 2 of the wrecks where you will be most likely to see sharks. Then there is also a cleaning station called Shark Reef, situated in Shark Island, where sharks wait for their turn to be cleaned by the bommies.
