PADI’s Guide to Teaching Contents

Teaching Techniques

Right up front, in the Teaching Techniques section, you’ll find the information you look for when teaching a program for the first time, or when it’s been a while since you’ve taught a course and want to refresh yourself on how to organize it. As a companion to the Instructor Manual, this manual gives you recommended techniques you can use to help divers meet the confined and open water performance requirements, things to consider when organizing, and how to help you put safety first.

Philosophy and Approach

Next you’ll find the Philosophy and Approach section, which discusses the PADI organization and the PADI System of diver education. It also reviews PADI’s approach to risk management and the quality management, assurance and recognition programs. There’s information about training dive leaders and other important references about instructional approach and philosophy.

Membership Procedures

Refer to this section when you need specifics on submitting PIC envelopes or applications to your PADI Office and other procedural information.

Instructor Development

This sections primary purpose is to support the instructor development process. There are worksheets and templates new instructors use during the IDC, which remain in this manual for reference.

The course can be completed either in a 5 – 7 day format – the IDC – or two separate sections AI & OWSI. We Prefer a less stressed candidates, a 9 Day Program you’ll have no stress and you enjoy and have fun during your IDC.

There is always the eLearning IDC Theory online, should you take this option, you will not need to attend parts of the IDC Live Presentations as this is covered on-line.

Who teaches the program?
A PADI Course Director must conduct the full IDC or the OWSI program. We have our own IN-House PADI Course Director Joey A. Ridge, check to see if your CD is just employed or is Full Time. PADI Staff Instructors can conduct the AI portion of the IDC program, should you choose to do this course separately.

When you take your IDC at Easy Divers Cyprus, you will be taught by Easy Divers PADI Course Director, a highly experienced PADI Course Director for many years experience and employed full time on staff.

Independent Learning Prerequisite, Prior to the start of an Instructor Development Course, Assistant Instructor course or OWSI program, a self study is wise of the knowledge workbook and notes from your divemaster theory is wise choice. During the IDC Preparation Course we will work closely with you to eliminate your individual difficulties, before the IDC begins.

What PADI materials do I require for the IDC?
PADI have recently upgraded and launched the new IDC Crew Pak 2010 a rucksack containing updated materials for the IDC. We recommend you purchase this to ensure you have all the materials you require, IDC candidates also need the eRDPml. We can help you, if required with the padi materials – just email us to purchase your IDC Crew Pack.

What preparation do I need to do?
You will need to complete any knowledge reviews contained, prior to attending either the IDC or AI program. This could be the Dive Theory Online or the Knowledge Workbook. Our advice is also to practice your skill circuit and revise your theory, in particular Physics, Physiology, Equipment, Skill & Environment and RDP/eRDPml using the knowledge workbook and practising on the Divemaster exams for these topics.

Many centres advertise the cheapest IDC, why don’t Easy Divers?
With price brings quality ‘CHEAP – FREE’, those that can’t compete on quality compete on price. We also keep our number of candidates to a maximum five, for quality! What would you like us to remove from the program to be able to make the Cheap PADI Instructor IDC – the experience of the Course Director and staff, quality, knowledge, professionalism, experience, patience, time, safety or…………?

How fit do I need to be?
You certainly need to be dive fit and have a current medical signed by a doctor. We are not asking you to be Olympian Diver but a high standard of fitness is required, as you will need to swim 800metres with mask snorkel and fins.

Many advertisers claim a 100% pass rate at there PADI IE’s?
Beware of the false advertiser or certain countermeasures may have been costed into to your IDC. Many centres claim this but do not say on which IE the candidates all pass the first, second or…. Also many will also claim this with the get out clause, being that if you fail on theory its not their responsibility. Successfully completing the IE is a logical conclusion of your preparation and subsequent development on the IDC program.

Just as you would never put a student in the water or certify a diver whom you did not think was ready for it. Our Course Director Joey will not recommend you attend the IE until both you and he feels you are ready for it. Don’t stress yourselves out about this part, the IDC will develop you and make you a very successful instructor candidate.

I have heard the course is very stressful & intense is that true ?
The Instructor Development Course is certainly and can be very fast moving, but enjoyable. However we will do our best to provide you with a relaxed low stress comfortable learning environment. People learn best when they are having fun, we think you should have fun too. This is why we choose a longer IDC program, giving IDC candidates time to grasp any new techniques, skills or theory.

After completing the course how long have I got before I have to attend an IE?
You have up to 12 months to attend an IE before having to repeat IDC training. We have arranged with PADI to provide an IE here in Cyprus, straight after your IDC course, or we can provide you with a full list of exams local to you in another country should you wish to attend a IE outside of Cyprus.

What happens if I can’t complete the program?
We will work within reason, with you to help you subsequently reach any and all performance requirements for the program. We will then help you to remediate until you meet the requirements during the normal course schedule.

Can Assistant Instructors trained in the old program simply take the 4-day OWSI program?
Yes – but remember it is up to the Course Director to evaluate candidates suitability, so some may be asked to attend the whole program. Since the new Padi standards for 2010 has changed, you will need to attend the full IDC.

Will I need my own equipment for the IDC?
Yes – I think you would agree that as a dive professional you should look the part and not have rented or borrowed school equipment. Could you imagine a builder or a plumber coming to your home to make repairs and borrowing your tools???? Not Professional!

What if candidates do not have the opportunity to complete the on-line independent study section?
Then the IDC must accommodate to allow for this study in class. We will cover this in the FREE Prep Course before the IDC.

What happens if I am unsuccessful in the IE?

Retaking your PADI IDC diving instructor exam! Should you be unsuccessful you may, at your second IE, retake only the sections in which you were unsuccessful, e.g. failure on the Padi IE skill circuit would result in a make up only on the confined water sessions of the Padi IE Candidates will only be required to pay for the sections they have to retake at a second IE. Not Retaking your FULL PADI IDC – IE diving instructor exam again.
